A Place in the Sun was written about Mussolini’s invasion of Ethiopia as a means to bring Italy back to the empirical greatness of the Romans. He believed Italy “deserved” a place in the sun — Africa. The idea that one nation and its people should believe itself fundamentally greater than others and that they “deserve” what others have was preposterous to me – and yet, I am here on this Canadian soil precisely because of this kind of domination. When writing this song, I was thinking of the history of nations that take drastic measures to believe themselves greater than others. I did not, however, foresee that the words would become so much a part of our current political narrative. Soon, “MAGA” entered strongly into the contemporary vernacular and the words of Caesar and Mussolini were suddenly not part of the distant past anymore. A Place in the Sun….make our nation great again.
